The Malvern Hills have long fired the imagination of writers and composers: Edward Elgar, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis among them, all drawn to this singular pocket of Britain.
It is said that The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe began here. Stepping out of The Unicorn pub in Great Malvern one winter's night, C.S. Lewis saw a gas lamp burning through the falling snow and remarked that it would ‘make a very nice opening to a book’. And so, Lucy's first, lamplit glimpse of Narnia was born. What makes this setting truly unique is that Malvern features one of the largest working collections of functional gas lamps in the UK. Today, these Victorian gas lamps still light the way from the pub to The Cottage in the Wood, offering a rare, atmospheric walk into the lamplit night. You may have noticed the gas lamps across our grounds and on our logo, too.
