Where Our Story Began
“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” — Henry James
Afternoon tea is where this whole house began. The Cottage in the Wood opened as tea rooms in 1919, and we have been laying the three-tiered stand ever since. These days with what we think is the best afternoon tea in Malvern, and certainly one of its finest views. Take it in The Brasserie overlooking the valley wrapped in woodland wallpaper, or out on the terrace with the Severn Valley sweeping down to the Cotswolds. A treat with friends, a celebration with family, or simply an afternoon worth slowing down for.
Freshly brewed tea in fine china, and a three-tiered stand brought to the table: delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, dainty cakes and homemade pastries – the time-honoured ceremony, done properly. Add a glass of premium Champagne to make an occasion of it.
A Little History
The ritual dates to the 1840s, when Anna, Duchess of Bedford, took to calling for tea and cake to see her through the long afternoon – and a British institution was born. Our own story is nearly as old: tea rooms from 1919 into the 1950s, and, it is rumoured, Elgar himself at the piano here in the twenties.
