History

The History of Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea has been a British tradition since 1840, when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford requested a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake to her room in the late afternoon. By 1845, her high-tea habits had become a fashionable social event which friends and family attended together, and today Afternoon Tea is one of the most popular treats to enjoy with family or friends. As for our History, The Cottage in the Wood opened as a tea rooms in 1919, and operated as one until the 1950’s, with a famous appearance from Elgar who performed in the tea rooms in the 1920’s.
